HM Nautical Almanac Office: Astronomical Data for Muslims

Visibility of the New Crescent Moon

HMNAO produces information sheets which give the date of earliest visibility of the new crescent Moon for each lunar month for a selection of cities in the UK and around the world for an interval of 5 years. In addition, there are information sheets which give the local date, local mean time and place of the earliest sighting of the new Moon for the same interval.

By using the "Moonviz" option of Websurf, visibility predictions for the new crescent Moon can be generated for any location on the Earth and for any range of months. Sample output for London for September and October 2007 is available.

An opportunity to provide raw data for our modelling effort and more information in general on the earliest visibility of the new crescent moon can be found on the Crescent MoonWatch web site.

Prayer Times

By using the "Prayers" option of Websurf, the seven daily Muslim prayer times for any location on Earth and for any range of dates can be calculated. The prayer times can be optimised to particular astronomical phenomena by the user. Sample output for London for the second week of September 2007 is available.
