Crescent Moon Visibility for Ramadan 2020

Summary

Crescent Moon over Ash Priors on 18th April 2007 The visibility of the new crescent moon for April 2020 and the start of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan is shown in the table below. We have included Mecca (with timings in Arabian Standard Time – AST) and Rabat (with timings in Western European Time – WET between April 19th and May 24th) for reference as well as a number of cities across the United Kingdom. Times of sunset (SS) and moonset (MS) in British Summer Time (BST) are shown where relevant. Offsets from Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) are also given. The entry **:** indicates the setting phenomenon takes place the following day. The instant of new Moon takes place on Thursday April 23rd 2020 at 02:26 UT / 03:26 BST. Naked-eye sightings of the new crescent moon are possible from the central part of the Pacific Ocean region and easy sightings are possible from the Hawaiian Islands and the central Pacific Ocean region to the east of the International Date Line. No naked-eye sightings of the new crescent moon are likely to take place on Thursday April 23rd from the Middle East, North Africa or the United Kingdom. Easy sightings of the crescent moon on Friday April 24th are likely globally with the possible exception of south-eastern Australia, New Zealand and the north-eastern parts of Russia. For those observers in the Middle East, North Africa and the United Kingdom, easy sightings should be possible with the naked eye on Friday April 24th. Global sightings are likely on Saturday April 25th.

1) – Thursday April 23rd 2020: It should be noted that the Moon sets before the Sun in the light brown-shaded area covering north-eastern Russia. A telescopic sighting of the new crescent moon with small, conventional amateur-sized telescopes is possible from the southern mid-Atlantic region around Ascension Island. Naked-eye sightings of the new crescent moon are possible from central parts of the Pacific Ocean region and easy sightings may be possible from the Hawaiian Islands and the central Pacific Ocean region to the east of the International Date Line.

2 – Friday April 24th 2020: Easy sightings of the crescent moon on Friday April 24th are likely globally with the possible exception of south-eastern Australia, New Zealand and the north-eastern parts of Russia. These exceptions may be able to observe the crescent moon under excellent conditions. Easy sightings should be possible from the Middle East, North Africa and the United Kingdom.

3) – Saturday April 25th 2020: The crescent moon should be easily visible to the naked eye worldwide.
