Spotting the Ramadan New Crescent Moon ...

Ramadan Crescent Moon from Ash Priors at 21:15 BST on 19th June 2015 The photograph to the right shows the new crescent moon as observed in daylight from Ash Priors in Somerset at 21:15 BST on 19th June 2015. Efforts were made to locate the new crescent moon the previous day between 21:30 BST and 22:20 BST on June 18th but cloud close to the western horizon precluded a successful search. The crescent moon was originally sighted with the naked eye at 20:08 BST on June 19th in less than ideal conditions i.e. amongst scattered cirrus clouds. The Moon was 10.9% illuminated, just over 77-hours old at an altitude of 26.9° above the horizon at an elongation of some 39° east of the Sun. The Sun was at an altitude of 10.2°. This sighting was made one day later than the prediction made using the Websurf Crescent Moon visibility function.

Eid al-Fitr — July 2015

Spotting the Eid al-Fitr New Crescent Moon ...

Eid Crescent Moon from Ash Priors at 21:15 BST on 18th July 2015 The photograph to the right shows the new crescent moon as observed in daylight from Ash Priors in Somerset at 21:10 BST on 18th July 2015. Efforts were made to locate the new crescent moon the previous day on July 17th but nothing was seen. The crescent moon was originally sighted with the naked eye at 21:02 BST on July 18th in less than ideal conditions i.e. amongst scattered clouds near the horizon. The Moon was 7.5% illuminated, just under 67-hours old at an altitude of 9.8° above the horizon at an elongation of some 32° east of the Sun. The Sun was at an altitude of 1.7°. This sighting was in keeping with the prediction made using the Websurf Crescent Moon visibility function.
